The Flavour Of The Med In West Somerset

The cats whisker Kitchen, Anchor Street, Watchet

A rare lunch date with my wife prompted a visit to The Cats Whisker Kitchen in Watchet, West Somerset. The Cats Whisker is a place I've heard many good reports about and have been meaning to try it for several months so this was the ideal opportunity.

The Cats whisker is tucked away in Anchor Street in Watchet in a building that used to be the Anchor Inn.The bare stone wall interior which is suitably adorned with mediterranean style art give the place a quintessentially rustic feel. We were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome from the host who promptly showed us to our table which was situated right next to the inglenook fireplace.

After some deliberation over the menu we decided on the charcuterie sharing platter for our entree - which consisted of garlicky slices of toasted ciabatta accompanied by manchego cheese, serrano ham, chorizo, queen olives, grated tomato and garlic dressing and of course the ubiquitous portion of alioli without which no southern Spanish fayre would be complete. The dish came out on a generous slate platter and it was obvious that great attention to detail and care had been given to its presentation. The course was enjoyed with a perfectly good glass of house white and a coke over ice for the designated driver (me).

For the main course we chose a couple of tapas - one portion of chorizo sausage cooked in red wine and fresh mussels in white wine, cream and tarragon sauce with a hearty portion of crusty wholemeal bread. Both dishes were really tasty and polished off with gusto. On hindsight we should have ordered a couple more tapas dishes purely because they were just so damn delicious.

With lunch consumed we picked up the bill which came out at under £30 for the two of us which to me seemed more than reasonable for the quality of food we were served and had a leisurely drive back along the coast road to Minehead. We will definately be eating here again making our next visit during evening service when we're told it's very advisable to book as it gets very busy.
